A Child's Guide to Personal Success
November 8, 2005

Here are a few tried and proven methods that have been used to create a successful young life and put that life on the true path to ultimate success.

  1. You must always believe in yourself. What others may think of you are but fleeting ideas given from their own situational education and prejudices. Pay no attention to them. Your belief in your own path and your morals, values, and abilities is what is most important. See, if 1,000 people tell you that you'll never be successful, is that more important than you believing that you can be? Do not be risk adverse-go for your goals and dreams! Think about it this way; intelligence can be defined as four things….(1) Focus ability along with focus of the here and now, (2) Atmosphere-as in what surrounds you and what is going on, (3) Speed of informational processing, and (4) Collecting intellectual data, reviewing possible outcomes, then arriving at a conclusion. If you believe that others can define you based on small amounts of information about you and be 100% accurate, you are mistaken.
  2. You must establish a series of strong moral beliefs and live your life according to them. No one gets anywhere in life by living his/her life according to moral relativism (i.e If it feels good, do it, even if it's illegal). Your moral beliefs and how you approach life from the moral perspective speaks volumes on you. If you look at any successful person, they have a very strong moral background that they derive strength and character from. Moral absolutism is what you want. Practice moral absolutism, courtesy, and politeness in all endeavors and you cannot go wrong!
  3. You must act in a way in that every action is being watched. Not only does this define the character of a good person, but with the invention of the Internet and the world becoming digitized and smaller, there is always the possibility that something you thought you may have gotten away with in the past could come back to haunt you. You can permanently damage your potential career success this way. Always you MUST TAKE THE HIGH ROAD in all things.
  4. You must find your hidden talents and expand on them. There is no one on this planet that does not have a special talent for something. You job is to find out what that is. Learn all you can about it and practice it daily. Keep in mind that the best in the world always practice one thing and do it with a religious fervor. Single-minded application is a sure-fire way to succeed in any given field of endeavor.
  5. You must practice good personal hygiene and grooming habits. Nobody ever liked sitting next to the stinky kid in school. How about the one who does not seem to dress in a coordinated, or socially acceptable manner? Don't be the stinky kid or the social misfit. Keep your body, your mouth, and your clothes clean. Avoid anything else that is going to mar you from success. Dressing in a socially acceptable manner is NOT a sign of weakness or lack of individualism. Fortune 500 companies and Government officials dress a certain way because the people that hire for those jobs want people who will not embarrass there company or their cause, and they want to be taken SERIOUSLY.
  6. You must always take care of your physical health. This means that you must practice proper diet habits at every meal and you must train your body. There are countless ways to do this (I like CKD, running, and resistance training), but what is important is that you make a lifestyle out of exercise and proper diet. Don't make excuses, build a solid, healthy body. Every meal and every training session must count!
  7. You must fully educate yourself and develop strong study habits. As the world becomes smaller, the availability of pertinent education expands exponentially. There are so many sources of information now, that it becomes more important to take your schoolwork seriously (like a job) and to read everything you can get your hands on. Developing a habit of a minimum of 3 hours of study a day pays big dividends down the line. Make it a priority to broaden your mind!
  8. You MUST abstain from alcohol, drug, and tobacco usage. Know how drug pushers, alcohol and tobacco manufacturers get rich? REPEAT BUSINESS! It is imperative that these people make junkies and drunks out of you or they are out of business-plain and simple. While you get sicker, they get wealthier. Even if you only did these things OCCASIONALLY, think of the time you could be doing something productive and the money you would keep in your own pocket by not purchasing and using their products.
  9. You must pick friends who are exemplary people. Just as "You are what you eat", so too are you seen as "Who you hang out with". You can rest assured that if your friends are not winners, even if you are, you will be tagged with the "Guilt by Association" label. Seek others who are also seeking the moral high ground. Winners hang with winners.
  10. You must be able to protect yourself from physical harm. If you cannot defend yourself in this world, you will eventually fall victim to it. Learning a martial art, learning to use a weapon in self-defense, staying out of trouble deliberately, and learning to stay clear of danger will pay off for you. Think of it like putting money in the bank. It hurts a little when you do it, but feels really good when you really need it and you know it is there.
  11. You must always value a watchful eye. Choosing mentors is an important step in your development. If you want to be a Pro Golfer, you learn from someone who played on the tour. If you want to be rich, learn how from someone who has a lot of money. Those who take you "under their wing" and teach you how to be successful and avoid the pitfalls of your chosen field of endeavor must and should be sought out, retained, and valued.
  12. You must set personal goals of achievement, meet them, then exceed them. For whatever you want to do in life, you must know where you want to end up. Once you know this, finding the way to get there is relatively simple (not painless, however). Take the time to write your goals down on paper where you can review them from time to time (daily is better). You will no doubt find, as I have, that once you achieve you initial goals, it is simply another step to go beyond them. The beauty of this is that you will go further on your journey than you initially thought. Finally, always keep in mind that it is the journey and not the destination where all fun is.

PIL SUNG!
